Antarctic Learning…

The longer I’m here the more about this place I want to learn.  I was at Hut 10 for the first time a few weeks ago and ran into some interesting thoughts.  (Hut 10 is like a cabin that can be signed up for and used for work or personal parties, or just some time … Read more

Notes from Summer Camp

Today is another a beautiful day in paradise. Low winds and high temps (+32 ambient) with no clouds for hundreds of miles. Should be a nice mud pit later today after the ice on the roads unfreezes. Might even be a good day to wander out to Willy (Williams Field) which is where they just … Read more

Let’s talk about Food

First off a Weather update.  We had a minor storm walk through and change this place from being a warm mud pit to being something that you’d think Christmas should look like, especially with the Christmas lights and decorations going up everywhere.  Blowing snow turned the outlying areas into Condition 2 for a while, but … Read more

Sunpath

So I’ve been harping on the difference between what you guys see the sun do in the states verse what we see here at McMurdo and I’ve been having a hard time of trying to figure out how to best describe it. I have struck upon a way to show you however, take a peek.Remember … Read more

Sickness and work

I spent yesterday being sick to the stomach and therefore sleeping, laying around, drinking ginger tea, and generally taking it easy.  I do feel better today, I’ve managed to eat some ramen yesterday as well as bits of leftover turkey from thanksgiving.  I’ll be taking it easy and hopefully it’ll be better today.  Needless to … Read more

Aloha!

What to do in Antarctica?

First off, the weather today is a perfect example of why the wind makes all the difference.  It’s an ambient +19F but we have a 15-25 Knot wind that’s been blowing through, it’s a cold -9F outside with cloudy skies.  We are definitely wearing big red today. I’ve been working on this question of “What … Read more

Responding to readers

I’m happy to have such a readership of friends and family as I do.  I want to thank you all for your encouragement and the emails I get as I don’t think I’d be writing if the feedback wasn’t there.  Keep up the questions and thoughts because they are the most enjoyable part of these … Read more

A new era

Somewhere between the constant sun, the lively and interesting people down here, the nights that are never really nights, or perhaps the unique and constantly challenging environment we live in, I’ve really grown attached to this place.  Obviously it’s an early love having only had 5 weeks to mature so far, but if not for … Read more

One way to be a Happy Camper…

Is to freeze on permanent sea ice. Well not really freeze. Actually most of the time I was perfectly toasty. For those of you who don’t quite remember, Happy Camper (actually called Snowcraft I) is a two day survival school for people who might need it here on the Ice. So you might ask why … Read more
